In 2050, Tie Lu, a gifted girl unable to leave home because of childhood trauma, remotely controls a household robot named Tutu as he crosses South America in search of four gifts left along the way by her photographer mother. Tutu meets travellers from all walks of life. Amid robotic poaching, ecological crises and an AI uprising, he gradually grows from a service robot into an independent being with emotions. To bring him home, Tie Lu finally opens the door she has kept shut for ten years and pilots a giant robot across the South Atlantic.
